Costa Rica Mission Work with Rice and Beans Ministries
One of the best things about being in the charter fishing business in Alabama, is the ability to meet so many wonderful people. Over the years, we have taken public figures, executives, families and friends fishing, but none have impressed us more than Papa Fred Curry of Rice and Beans Ministries based in Ellisville, Mississippi (near Hattiesburg).
Fred is one of the most humble people you will ever meet. For the first couple of years of knowing him, we knew he was different but he never said what he did for his living. I never asked. After hurricane Katrina, I found out what an extraordinary person he is. I had no idea of what an impact he has each year on thousands of Costa Rican families.
Fred is the founder of Rice and Beans Ministries and his whole goal is to do Gods work. He does this through a Multi-Denominational Mission in Costa Rica.
Rice and Beans Core Belief
Rice and Beans lives by the scripture from the book of Micah 6:8 "But he's already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It's quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don't take yourself to seriously --take God seriously.
Current Projects
Papa Fred will be in Costa Rica from December 5 to the 20th. The goal of this trip is to try and help 500 families at $50 each. We want to feed these families for Christmas and provide small gifts to the children. We are also wanting to provide school clothes for these children. School is out right now but will begin on Feb 1, 2010. The average cost for childrens uniforms is $40.00 us. The goal for this mission trip is to raise $25,000 usd for this trip. They are half way there.
The Maria Project
Maria is a woman who lives in a house made of plastic and has four children. She is building a house with donated materials. When Maria was found, she only had 1 cup of rice to feed her four children. Our goal is to help her complete her home. We are raising money to help build her home. The rate of pay for labor is $1.00 per hour. One kilo of rice sells for $3.00. Her power and utility bills cost about $50.00 per month. If you would like to contribute to the Maria Project, please let them know.
For years, Rice and Beans Ministries has been visiting Central America with the vision to feed the hungry and give them a true message of Christ's love. The Maria project began with a vision to empower local congregations to have a local outreach to their local communities. They wanted to help congregations build and repair housing and participate in the ministry of Rice and Beans.
Rice and Beans goal is to cook for the indigent and homeless, buy uniforms for school children and have bible study opportunities in the poorest of areas of Costa Rica and Central America.
