See Mola Mola or Ocean Sun Fish in Alabama Coastal Waters
Commonly known at Sunfish or Mola Mola, is the biggest fish with bony fish in the world. Although we do not see a lot of them off the coast of Orange Beach, Alabama, we do see our share of them during the Spring of the year. The only reason we see them during March, April and May of each year is because that is when the Portuguese Man Of War Jelly Fish are migrating across the Gulf of Mexico and that is what Sunfish like to eat.
These unusual fish are prehistoric looking and are amazing to look at. Mola Mola looks like a fish with a head and a dorsal fin and a bottom fin equal in size to the dorsal fin. The body of the Sunfish looks like a huge silver dollar with some weardly designed tail. The large fins stick up out of the water and are amazingly flexible and cup the water and help propel the fish as it swims.
Not surprising, the Sunfish eats jelly fish. We witnessed this one come up to a big jelly fish floating on the surface and open his 2 liter size drink bottle of a mouth and suck the jelly fish in. The Mola Mola kept it's mouth above the surface and suddenly shot water like a jet out of its mouth. As the mouth was jetting water, the jaws came together and looked like it chomped off the tenticles. This was one amazing sight to see. Our guests certainly thought it was cool.
Just reading about the Sunfish or Mola Mola, I found out that the largest one ever caught was over 3,500 pounds in 1910. They have observed some of these fish weighing up to 5,100 pounds. Either way, these fish are huge and are absolutely amazing to see.
